Essel Champions Golf 2006
On 16 and 17 May 2006 the third successive Essel Champions Golf Event was held.
Prior to the match golf was played on Paris International’s gorgeous course. Due
to World Cup preparations the previous editions’ winner, Guus Hiddink, was unable
to defend his title. Therefore this course, famous for the fastest greens in France,
was sure to see a new winner!
After the arrival of all 80 guests on Tuesday night, the Event kicked off with a
dinner party in Chateau Montvillargene, situated in the woods just outside of Paris.
The battle for the new title was held on Wednesday under great weather conditions.
Playing in four-person flights, the team of John van het Schip, Martijn van der
Meulen, Peter Jan Rubingh and Jan-Hein Peek ultimately gained the Essel Trophy.
After a sumptuous lunch the group left for the Stade de France to see the Barcelona-Arsenal
final, which ended in a 2-1 victory for Frank Rijkaard’s Spanish team. After this
generally satisfying result people returned home by plane, bus or car. Next year’s
final will be held in Athens, then also the site of the fourth consecutive Essel
Champions Golf Event.
